table de Teschen

The real treasure of the chateau is the Table of Teschen. In 1778 a conflict broke out between Austria and Prussia about the succession of the Duke of Bavaria. Louis XVI, called in as mediator, sent the Baron de Breteuil to intervene, and his reward for the peace that was achieved after months of difficult negotiations was this table.
The table was made by the goldsmith Neuber in Dresden, and is entirely encrusted with stones selected with the greatest of care by the artist. They are numbered from 1 to 128 and are identified in the small booklet which accompanies the table. All the other decorative elements celebrate the benefits of the peace achieved.
